broken arm at work

A friend fell off a step ladder at work last week (no access to internet) has broken arm (raidial by the elbow) and is waiting for operation to set correctly, also nasty scrape on head.   He has worked for Company for 2 1/2 years, Boss says he is only entitled to statutary sick pay approx Â?60.00 per week.

He says, it was a genuine accident, nobody's fault, but is not sure how long he will be off work (manual labourer), following operation at least 10-12 weeks. lClearly will not be able to manage paying, rent, utilities, food etc on SSP.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
