Advice on my whiplash claim

I was rear ended in June 2010 and suffered a whiplash injury. The initial report by the private GP I was referred to stated I would recover in 4 months and no Physio was required. This was not the case and since then my own GP has referred me for 2 courses of Physio and has prescribed me painkillers. Can you help me with the these questions? 1) My solicitor tried to convince me to settle stating that a further doctor's assessment would cost me cĀ?600 if it does not progress my claim. This has worried me but I have gone ahead anyway as I am still in pain, was this the right thing to do? 2) My appointment isn't until March and my solicitor have told me I cannot self refer myself for any private treatment e.g. Physio or Chiropractor because I cannot claim the charges back unless it has been recommended by one of their doctors. The problem is I won't see him until March and the letter he has sent me states he will not perform any tests or make any referrals-it states he is simply reviewing how my pain is currently affecting my every day life. Is this right?
