Child hit car on push go-kart

My son and his friend were playing on a campsite, riding a go-kart down the dirt track next to where some cars were parked, the cars were parked on the campsite next to tents and not in an official car park.

Purely by accident, the lads lost control of the go-kart and ended up hitting a car, leaving a very minor dent and also a scratch down the side of the car.

To diffuse the situation I exchanged details (name, address, tel no), and apologised on behalf of the boys, but made no statement that would suggest that I would accept liability for the damage.

I wish to hear some advice on whether the car owner really has a claim against me, I would like to do the decent thing and give the chap compensation, but I am not in a financial position to do so.
