Hit and Run by a Foreign Driver

Good Afternoon Everyone

Thanks for taking the time to read this and hopefully help me!!

Yesterday my partner was involved in a hit and run in Glasgow where a white Ford Transit smashed into the back of her car, both parties got out and the van driver asked if she was okay, after seeing that she clearly wasnt he got back in the van and drove away which really makes your blood boil. Anyway, she got the registration number GTF881 and managed to get to the police station where they couldnt trace the number as its foreign and didnt really seem to care. She has just recently left hospital and now we are both having to take time off work.

Does anyone know if we can claim compensation from any parties as I am worried that these people are allowed to drive about in our country and cause mayhew to you and me without recourse. I am even thinking about lodging a claim against the DVLA?

Again, Thanks

James

It can often be difficult to get compensation from a foreign driver as their insurance procedures may be different or they may simply be uninsured. If this is your experience, you can contact the Motor Insurers Bureau for help. They may be able to provide you with details of the driver and their insurance company, as long as you have the correct registration plate.

Remember that in some countries, some of the larger trucks and lorries have a different registration plate on the main cabin than on the trailer - try and obtain both if possible. The Motor Insurers Bureau are also able to help if the driver who was involved in the collision with you doesn't have insurance or the insurance company they do have doesn't have a UK counterpart. In these cases, the MIB will normally control the case and follow it up for you.
