My hsband died in the work accident - what to do?

My husband was working in a very small company owned by our friend. When the accident occured he showed us very supportive attitude, helping to cover the costs of the private clinic, organizing help in driving kids to school whn I was at the hospital with my husband.. Unfortunately, my husband died.

I want to claim for the compensation for my children to assure their future. I don't know a lot about the claims procedures but the former employer wants to come to the agreement before reffering it to his insurer! (I want to do it only now as before I was bussy with taking care of my husband and children..). What should I do in this case? Is it necessary? Is it possible to get the free legal aid or I have to sign some contract based on "no cure no pay" rules? If I have to sign the contract what is important in this kind of agreement - should I put the attention to something special?
