unability to work due to the depression

Could you tell me if I can get money for the period in which I was unable to work due to the depression? I started to be in a very bad psychical condition as my family was facing serious problems. I was asked to go for the unpaid leave.  To my mind it was unfair and I should stay in the sick leave due to my condition. What's your opinion?
