how much compensation should my son expect?

My son was involved in a car accident nearly 2 years ago. He was travelling along a dual carriage way though some lights on green but another car cut across him.  Unfortunatly a boy died in the other car. He has had his life changed since this. He has also had counciling, and physio for back pain, he suffers from nightmares also and his whole personality has changed. Dispite being cleared from any responsability for the accident by the police and having to attend an inquest into the accident.
We feel that the insurance company and our solicitors are perpared to settle his claim for far less than we expected and thought reseasonable. They have offered only between ?4000 and ?5000. this really doesn't seam enough.
Can anyone give us further advise and is this reasonable?
