took a bad fall

I work as a security guard ans while at work I took a pretty bad fall. I went to the clinic that my employer told me to go to and was told by the doctor not to work until I saw him again in a week. The doctor gave me a form which put this in writing and I gave the form to my employer. However, my employer refused to let me have the week off. I couldn't afford to lose my job because I have a family to support, so I worked during that time. One day I worked almost a 12 hour shift. Is my employer allowed to do this? Do I have any legal recourse?

I'm not an expert, but I do not think that your boss is allowed to do that, though I did some research, and it may depend on the size of the company you work for, and the length of time that you have been employed by them. All the information I got came from a government site on the Family and Medical Leave Act. You can read it online: Family Medical Leave Act. Basically, if you are covered by it, then your boss is definitely wrong. I don't know if this means that you can sue, but I am sure that there are some measures you could take. I would imagine that suing would be difficult, because you weren't actually hurt again when you worked against the doctor's orders, and it would probably be hard to prove that the working made your recovery time longer. Anyways, take a look at the act and see what you think. You might not be covered, so it might be completely ok for the boss to force you to work if you wanted to keep your job.
